Fabric Presentation Board.

Your Space A/W 11/12.

For our fabric presentation board we tried to incorporate the ethos behind ‘Your Space’ by housing all of the elements into a box and creating a micro-environment. This micro, hidden, environment also reflects the selected privacy of ‘Your Space’ – to build a barrier around yourself and hide.

Since ‘Your Space’ represents a clean, efficient look we painted the box white to remove all character and give an almost clinical look.

We decided to cut the name of the trend out of fabric at the bottom of the box – this was to convey the subtle nature of the trend, to not be too overbearing.

To make our colour palette more interesting visually, and to also reflect the clinical nature of ‘Your Space’, we added little bottle and tins filled with watercolours of the appropriate pantone colours.

Our fabric samples are a fairly broad in range. We have denim, felt, and wool and cotton mixes. Each fabric represents something different within the trend, for example the denim is sturdy, for multi-functional work-wear, and the punctured cotton displays the rows and precision associated with the trend.

Since ‘Your Space’ is about order and function we decided to set everything into rigid rows and columns – this is to be a clutter free environment.

Overall I’m fairly happy with how the final presentation board turned out. With this been group work it you obviously have to learn to compromise with your peers – this doesn’t look 100% how I imagined it would at the start, but you have to accept that when there are my than one mind adding to the creative process.

Photos by Inka Lindergard and Niclas Holmstroem.

When I saw these photographs by Inka Lindergard and Niclas Holmstroem I thought they demonstrated the principle of ‘Your Space’ perfectly. In ‘Your Space’ the idea of camouflage going beyond optical illusions is encouraged. Here, in these pictures, I get a real sense of the people blending into their environment through the colour and the texture of their clothing. You know the people are there, yet they seem to be submerged in their settings.

There is no camera trickery, it’s the palette of the clothing alone which dictates that the people do not become the main focus of the photographs.

Your Space A/W 2011/12.

Your Space encourages us to strip back to the necessities in life, to stop with the clutter and to concentrate on what we really need. The focus is on function, with storage and self-sufficiency being paramount.

A sense of order is encouraged; rather than letting your environment spiral out of control, focus more on grouping and discipline. Your Style wants you to decide which clothing is practical to your needs and stick with it.

Flesh coloured tones and cuts highlighting the muscles of the body make the clothes and the wearing become one. No longer are the clothes solely there as something to cover the skin, but become a part of it.

The fabrics used help with this illusion of the wearer and the clothing becoming one. Fabrics like sheer-crepe and mesh mimic the skin and drape around the wearer enabling the boundaries to be blurred.

Another aspect of Your Style is that of selective privacy. With online social networking playing with the idea of privacy Your Space plays with the idea of invisibility and absence – to disappear into an environment. Again, fabric and colour are used to achieve this. Flecked particles and woven patterns create a kind of cloak which enable people to blend in with their environment.

Your Space encourages people to think about themselves, to think about their place in the world and how they can maximize their output through a heightened sense of self.
